I have a confession. I’ve been in the closet all these years and now it’s time to come out. Yes, I am a Pet Shop Boys fan. It’s not something I’m proud of, but there it is.
Actually I’ve been a big fan for years – since the days of Please & Actually, their first two albums. The last few years have seen my interest wane however, as my tastes moved on, and they (in my opinion) got a little lost. Anyway, they released a single at the end of 2003/begining of 2004 called “Miracles”, also featured on their 2003 “best of” album Pop Art. I love the track, and did so from when I first heard it, but I’d got out of the habit of buying their stuff so never heard the remixes. The other day I bought the Japan-only Miracles EP from Amazon and – wow – it’s great. The original track is classic Pet Shop Boys – very upbeat, orchestral and sounding great due to the usual fantastic production. Think of classics like “It’s Alright”, “Left To My Own Devices” or “Domino Dancing”, but brought bang up to date.
In terms of remixes, we have the Radio Edit and the 12″ Mix, which is just a longer version. Suitable for a mainstream club but very commercial. The Lemon Jelly mix is a nice, more chilled version – the intro in particular is great with each layer of the track slowly building up complete with clips of Neil talking over the top. The standout though is the Eric Prydz remix (which, for some reason, appears only to be available on the Japanese release). It takes the energy of the original and makes it much more club friendly with a thumping filter-house bassline and a deconstructed melody. I’d like the mixes to be longer, and I’d like a dub mix, but those are small complaints.
Now, how to fit this into my next set…
