Max Graham is a house DJ (based in Canada) who, although claiming not to play trance, appeals to a large number of trance fans. I first came across him on the 4th installment of the excellent Transport/Tranceport series which he mixed in 2001. His latest release Shine, is an uplifting mix with enough melody for the house set and a high enough bpm for the trance crowd. Not to mention the always welcome presence of prog fave Sander Kleinenberg. I’m looking forward to his next mix, for the Mixmag Live series, due out in August.
However, despite his excellent mix work, it’s his original productions which led me to write this post. He’s not put out a huge number of tracks, but they’re quite interesting. He’s recently been in the UK charts with a rework of “Owner of a Lonely Heart”, which whilst fun, is a little cheesy. On the other hand, the as-yet unreleased “I Know You’re Gone” (featuring Jessica Jacobs) is amazing. I have it on Markus Schulz Miami ’05 (which I pimped in an earlier post) and I simply love it. Really melodic with a great (and real-sounding) string section and haunting vocals – this is the new vocal trance. The 2 minute breakdown in the middle is one of the best of the last couple of years, followed by a build which is formula enough to be familiar, but still sounds fresh. Now if only he’d get on with releasing it!
