Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, decided to make it particularly hard to move game saves from the original Xbox to the Xbox 360. So you can still play your old games, but you have to start from scratch. Several companies have stepped in to fill this void, with Datel in particular releasing several products around this area. The most recent is the Xport360. This is a multifunction device, allowing you to read and write:
- Xbox 360 Hard Drive
- Xbox 360 Memory Card
- Original Xbox Memory Card
What’s nice compared to other similar units is that it basically takes the form of a dock which attaches to your PC via USB, you then attach the HDD or memory card and use their software to copy files in either direction. As well as moving saves between consoles, you can also use this to make backups in case of accident. No separate power supply is needed, it uses USB for power.
My opinion? It works well. Once setup properly I was able to copy and backup data with no problems. It’s pretty cheap ($40) so I’d recommend it.
EDIT: In response to the comment below from Fritz, the only problem I’ve had with the XPORT is that I couldn’t make it read my XBOX 1 memory card. This post explains how to fix that.
Please post how to set it up properly, I’ve tried three different systems (all XP PRO) and I still can’t get it to recognized the drive.
Tanks…
My computer won’t recognize my hard drive for some reason, any help?
Any info on how to get the HD recognized? I followed the xbox1 mem card instructions, and that worked ok, but the HDD still isn’t being recognized properly. After plugging the USB in, after a minute or two I just get “USB Device” showing up under “disk drives” in Device Manager, but the stupid Xport program doesn’t see it. Please help! Thanks.
I am experiencing the same as above. I attempted to install the most recent version of the XPort softwareon several different machines all running XP Pro. The XBox HD is listed as a “Mass Storage Device” and nothing that I do will force XP to choose any other driver for the HD. I have removed and reinstalled several times, each with a reboot, with no luck. I have been emailing Datel (codejunkies) almost every day for a week and have not heard back from them. Their support line is always tied up and I can’t get through there either.
Just wanted to follow up with the commenters having problems using the 360 HDD with Xport 360. All I can really say is that it works for me (which isn’t very useful I know). Some pointers – you shouldn’t need any drivers for the HDD. It should come up as a regular drive/Mass Storage Device in Windows – it does for me and the XPort 360 software still sees it. The only other thing I can suggest is trying the Xplorer 360 software, which although is not made by Datel claims to work with the Xport 360 as well. I’ve heard it’s better than the Datel software anyway, and it’s free.
Thanks Adam, but that software doesn’t work either. Looks like this product’s got some major issues. I’m returning mine and hoping for a fix later.
I had a similar problem with my PC not recognising my 360 HD.
When I first connected XPORT to the PC, I used the front USB ports. The drive spun up etc, the blue LED on the front of XPORT lit, but the PC did not find the 360 drive. What I found was that if I connected XPORT to the USB ports at the back of the PC, Windows XP Pro picked up the drive.
All the USB ports on my PC are USB 2.0 so I’m not sure what the difference is., I can only think that the USB ports at the front of the PC are connected via a cable to the motherboard, where as the rear USB ports are soldered directly to the motherboard.
My advice would be to try all USB ports on your PC before giving up.
I just got the Xport and I’m a little pissed off as it does not recognize my hdd either. It plugged in, got a blue light, windows even recognized it and installed it for me, but when I open up the software the popup window says no device found. Please connect a device?! Also tried the Xplorer360 software but it says Could not find a FATX drive to open. I emailed codejunkies so I hope there is a fix!
Well lol after a while with Datel support I finally got this to work. It turns out that the Xport 360 was malfunctioned from the start. A replacement was sent to me and works fine and I have to say its a neat little gadget to backup my entire 120 gb hdd.
Guys I had the exact same problem, but I managed to solve it by going into the Xport properties (right click icon, then properties) and under the compatibility tab I selected run as administrator. Hope this works for you all it did for me.
Thanks Michael, that’s worked for me, so simple! Cheers
i have the same probpem…i have tried everything…i tried using the program as admin…to no luck…..i also tried xplorer360….all of these wont pick up my hdd…..i do have a generic transfer cable…i bought it off of ebay…could that matter…does it have to be an official xbox transfer cable…..please help me as soon as possible im am about to pull my hair out trying to fix this
Old article but the comments are ranking high on google, so figured I’d post this;
I’ve got Windows XP and was having the same issue with it not recognizing the drive at all when I was running it through a USB hub. When I moved it to one of the main USB ports it picked it up fine. So to sum it up:
Windows XP: Try a different USB port
Windows Vista/7: Run as administrator (actually a good security feature)
My Xport 360 just wont pick up my Xbox360 120gb HDD, Im using Windows XP Home Premium. Please help me I have had my profile and saves deleted so many time and i dont want to risk it happenening again. i have tried Xplorer360 and it doesnt work eiether it just asks for some FATX drive? a solution to my problem would be very much appreciated. Thx
Oh by the way, I have ran as Administrator and connected my HDD through my official Microsoft transfer cable and it still does not find anything. the computer finds the HDD in device manager but Xport360 still does not find it.
