So I’m still playing GOW (despite a few other interesting things which came out this weekend!), and I thought I’d post a follow up with my thoughts having played through more of the single player campaign.
The graphics, if anything, impress me even more than they did at first. The sheer variety in the locations and landscapes is great, and the level of detail amazing. In many games, if you saw a room you went in, because there would inevitably be something interesting in there (like a pickup or a secret). You knew this because the designers wouldn’t go to the trouble of designing the room otherwise. Well, that’s not true in GOW. There are whole areas which seem to have been created for no other reason than to make the surroundings more realistic, and it adds to the immersion greatly.
Much has been made of the storyline being sub-par. Well, “par” is pretty low in the gaming world, so sub-par is awful, and it’s not that bad! I’d call it pretty standard fare, but the way each episode flows into the next makes the whole thing reminiscent of a show like 24, you feel like you’re following the characters around in pretty much realtime – taking part in one (really full-on) day.
There are however some niggles. The controls are usually pretty good but sometimes the “one button does everything” model fails. Standing there doing backflips while the enemy is shooting at you may be gymnastic, but it’s not very sensible. Sadly, unless you are perfectly lined up on the concrete block you want to hide behind, the game sometimes thinks you want to try for a triple-toeloop rather than just ducking out of sight. Also, while the game is generally pretty balanced, sometimes a particular section (and it’s not always a boss battle) will just be annoyingly (and randomly) hard. Fighting for what seems like hours to defeat a couple of enemies and then walking onto the next much easier battle leaves me feeling a little confused and like I missed something obvious. Maybe I did.
But it’s still an awesome game, even if it is amazingly mean with the gamer points. I mean you get less than 100 for completing the entire campaign.
