After the Dust had Settled

Posted on Sunday 25 October 2009

So it’s all over (at least for this year!). Thanks again to everyone who supported me in 24 Games in 24 Hours, the good news is that I raised a total of $913. The entire Second Life campaign this year generated over $140,000 for the kids who need it.

What surprised me was how much fun Samba Di Amigo was…but I never need to play Pole Position again 🙂

It’s Finally Here!

Posted on Friday 16 October 2009

Just about to try and get a good night’s sleep before starting 24 Games in 24 Hours bright and early tomorrow morning. Firstly a massive thanks to everyone who contributed, the current total is just over $900 which is way beyond what I had hoped for going into this. There are some reasonably famous gaming glitterati playing tomorrow who haven’t raised nearly as much…so I’m very excited to be able to help out the hospital in such a big way.

Secondly, I’ve filled in the couple of unclaimed slots in the schedule so head over there to see the final list. It’s an interesting mix of the old and new (including some VERY old!) which should keep things interesting. I do have a special place in my heart for those kind individuals who put rhythm games after midnight though!

Finally, if the gods of the interwebs are smiling on us you should be able to watch live via UStream. The page for the stream is here. There should be a chatroom there which I’ll pay occasional attention too as well. Of course, myself and Jackie will be posting throughout the day to Facebook and Twitter (@adamreeve, @jackiereeve). And if you’re in the area – swing by for cake.

See you on the other side!

Less than a week now

Posted on Monday 12 October 2009

It’s time for me to get in training for the 24 Games in 24 Hours marathon. Lots of endurance work (staying up late), caffeine tolerance reduction (stop drinking tea for a week to get maximum effect on the day) and of course some gaming practice. Got up to speed on Pain and Wipeout HD today, but I really need to work on my COD4 multiplayer or I’m going to get royally creamed during that hour.

Anyhow, if you want to donate but haven’t yet – it’s not too late! Just head over to the sponsorship page and sign up.

Wow – Over $500!

Posted on Friday 25 September 2009

So thanks to yet more generous donations I’ve passed the $500 mark in sponsorship for 24 Games in 24 Hours. Wanted to say thanks again to everyone who’s helped out, and remind anyone who hasn’t yet that it’s not too late!

24 Hours Are Filling Up!

Posted on Tuesday 8 September 2009

Amazingly enough I’m now getting close to my extended fund raising target – so far you guys & gals have donated a whopping $417, which is very exciting – THANK YOU!  This also means the schedule is filling up (almost half gone already). If you want the chance to pick one of the games I’ll be playing you’d better hurry up. Remember you can sponsor me for any amount you like but you only get to pick a game for $1/hour or above. Seeing as that’s half the fun, you know what to do 🙂

Hands On: Blur

Posted on Friday 4 September 2009

Played some of the new Activision racing title “Blur” last night. Make no mistake –  this is Need For Speed vs Wipeout. Actually an interesting idea, taking the street racing genre and adding weapons & powerups which are decidedly unrealistic.

First off, the game looks great. While I did see some jaggies (this was on a 60″ plasma) the styling is really nice – again very much like Wipeout. Lots of neon colors and crazy fireball effects. Realism is out the window here – the cars drive like their on ice and although there is a damage model if you crash out y0u magically appear back on the track pointing in the right direction after a second.

On the downside, I really didn’t like the handling which was way too floaty. Also, there’s some wacky product placement going on here. How many street racers do you know who drive 4 door BMWs? But overall it’s a fun game. Not sure if its worth $60 though.

Hands On: Tony Hawk RIDE

Posted on Friday 4 September 2009

So this is the game with the crazy plastic skateboard. I got to watch it being demoed by an Activision guy – and then saw some journalists fall off. Repeatedly. The level of enthusiasm wasn’t exactly overwhelming to be honest (even N’Gai just wanted to watch the demo).

Graphically it was very underwhelming, quite disappointing really. The level being showed off was a downhill slalom through city streets, with lots of fruit carts to smash through –  I was waiting  for the guys to walk across the street with a giant pane of glass! In one section you break through a wall (on a skateboard??) and the chunks of masonry looked N64 quality. Overall it looked like a cross between SSX and MarioKart (with some early Tomb Raider mixed in).

As for the controls, judging by how badly everyone except the demo guy did, I think they might have a problem. I guess maybe it’s better if you already skate, but I think everyone I saw would have been happier with a regular controller. Alas, all you’d have left then would be a really crappy skateboard game.

I Hit the Bigtime!

Posted on Friday 4 September 2009

For the first time ever is under an official embargo! I was at the Activision PAX media reception this evening where they were showing some of their new titles. Unfortunatly I can’t talk about them until tomorrow (due to aforementioned embargo), so for now I shall review their nibbles!

The crab cakes on a stick were interesting, if a little doughy. They had an awesome cheese plate with some very tasty fromage, but it was really missing some good ham. Figs are interesting, but they don’t make up for a lack of ham.

The desert table was better – some nice chocolate cakes with some kind of crunchy icing, and great pot au chocolat. All in all a tasty spread, and an open bar too with some decent chardonnay.

Highlight of the evening was watching N’Gai Croll watching someone demo Tony Hawk Ride. Seriously.

New High Score!

Well it seems we already broke my target for sponsorship – currently you’ve donated a whopping $273! So just to keep it interesting I’ve doubled the target to $500. Should be easy 🙂
